Bike-Ped Friendly Neighborhood Design

Key Words: Urban Design, Transportation, Bike Lanes, Pedestrian Space, GIS Analysis, Scenario-based Planning

This project started with examining the current condition of the elevation changes and the rail corridor that block Rose Hill residents to access the commercial space at Allied Street in Charlottesville, VA. I developed a hot spot analysis, traffic flow maps, and sections to demonstrate the needs for a bike-ped friendly design. In addition, I conducted a case study of Atlanta Beltline about transportation system improvement and public space redevelopment to learn innovative strategies of transportation and neighborhood connectivity. Then, I designed a plan trying to improve accessibility and connectivity of the neighborhood. I proposed the following designs as solutions: extensions to the existing trails, shared-use path, tunnels, and urban stairs. I also visualized each scenario with sections and impression drawings to showcase the feasibility of changing this blocked area into a bike-ped friendly space. The drawings below show a portion of my neighborhood design proposal.
